Shota Sagara 'Never stop working'

Never stop working: Don’t let there be excuses for not working towards your dreams with Shota Sagara.

By Coach Adam

It's been an unprecedented time, with most of us experiencing some form of lockdown due the COVID-19 global pandemic. Current measures have meant young athletes all over the world are finding new and alternative ways to train. Aspiring young Footballer, Shota Sagara, is no different having to adapt more than most.

Shota joined our July 2019 performance camp, before leaving Bangkok to continue his studies and pursure a professional football career. Until last month Shota had been in Barcelona, Spain, before having to return home to Japan. He shared with us insights into how the COVID-19 global pandemic has affected him and gave us all tips on how young athletes can make the best of the situation.

Firstly, tell us a little bit about yourself and what the current situation means for you…

After playing in Thailand for over 10 years, I recently moved to Barcelona, Spain in order to change my environment and explore different football cultures.

However, due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak our season finished early and I made the decision to move back to Japan with my family. This has meant we missed out on our remaining league fixtures as well as one of the biggest international tournaments, the Mediterranean International Cup (MIC).  At home in Japan, training and playing football is very limited due to the current situation.

How has COVID-19 changed your typical training week and who helps you with your training? (Training)

Back in Barcelona, I was training with the team 6 times a week, with gym sessions and individual training in between. This has now stopped, nonetheless during quarantine. I have created myself a 7 day bodyweight workout program, which uses limited equipment and space. I have also been going out to the park to do some ball mastery drills and run at the riverside. Recently, I have also decided to join an online virtual training program with the team, in the hope to regain my touch that I have lost during quarantine.

Have you had to make any changes to the way you eat and fuel your body?  (Nutrition)

Usually I follow an individual diet plan that my team has given me but that's now difficult as I am not able to leave home easily. I have been mainly living off take-out and frozen food, however to keep healthy, I try to choose the healthier options and have been eating at least 3 meals a day. I try avoiding snacks and soft drinks, as well as ordering a salad, and drinking 100% vegetable juice with every meal.

Tell us a little bit about how you still make time for recovery in your routine... (Recovery)

This hasn't changed too much, I still make sure I stretch after every workout and take a bath every night. I also have a recovery day every week where I stretch and do some mobility exercise.

What kind of things are you doing to stay positive and motivated?… (Mindset)

I have kept in touch with my friends and teammates, I also look out for people working out from home as this helps me motivate and push myself further. Moreover, I have been looking through some of my old videos and analysing to find areas where I could improve.

What's the most important thing you've learnt from this experience?

I learned that there are many outcomes that could come out of this situation. How you spend this time could alter the outcome and this is where the difference in us all will become apparent.

What are the key pieces of advice would you give to the young players out there reading this during this time?

Never stop working. Don’t let this be an excuse to not work towards your dream because you will definitely regret it. Use this time wisely as this will probably be one of the only times where you can actually focus and work on your weakness to come back stronger.

We like to finish with a quote or mantra that our athletes live by, can you share yours with us...

“This is what I came for.”
